After being eliminated from the first round in the ICC World Cup, Sarfaraz captained the team for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. He was then dropped from the Test and T20 teams after a 3–0 embarrassing defeat in the T20 series.
Pakistan's Test team captaincy was given to Azhar Ali while T20 was given to Babar Azam. No decision was made regarding the ODI team, after which it was expected that Sarfaraz could be retained as captain. It is now reported that Babar is also being given the captaincy of the ODI team.
