100 Dead as Iraq Ferry on Holiday Trip Sinks in Tigris River

The boat loaded with Kurdish Families Celebrating New Year in the Jihadist stronghold of Mosul, was sunk in the river on Thursday. 100 people were killed in the worst accident in Iraq, while some people were rescued. Most of the women and children lost their lives in this accident.

This accident caused a wave of grief in those residents, who recently started celebrating on the banks of the Tigris after leaving the Islamic State Group of the Northern City.

The Vessel was Packed with Men, women, and children crossing Tigris to go to a popular picnic area. 'This is a disaster, no one expected', a young man who was able to reach the coast. There were a lot of people on the boat, especially women and children.

While releasing a fresh toll, it was said that 94 People Died and 55 People were rescued. The Spokesman Saad Mann said that 19 children and 61 women lost their lives in this accident. Another security officer located in Mosul said that when the boat was sinking it had more than 100 passengers.

After several days of heavy rain, the authorities warned people to be cautious due to the release of water from the Mosul dam, which increased the level of the river. Hundreds of people coming to the forest area gathered for the first days of spring on the banks of the river because the disaster was in sight.

Ambulance and police vehicles brought the dead and the injured to the city's hospitals. Iraq's last major boat crash took place in March 2013, in which five people were killed.

Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi decreed three days of national mourning as he visited the site of the tragedy. He ordered a swift investigation "to determine responsibilities". The vessel was crammed with men, women, and children crossing the Tigris to go to a popular picnic area to celebrate Nowruz, the Kurdish New Year and a holiday across Iraq marking the start of spring.

The accident, which struck as the overloaded vessel turned back, also coincided with Mother's Day in Iraq.
