Uproar in the Northeast States on the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019

Shivani Alakh

After the Union Cabinet approved the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 and passed it from the Lok Sabha, the government is now trying to get it passed by the Rajya Sabha. Opposition parties (including Congress, TMC, CPI (M), DMK, SP, RJD) as well as many organizations of the North East are opposing it. Shiv Sena has also said that it will not support this bill if its doubts are not resolved.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday questioned whether those who will not support the bill are traitors? He said that there should be no vote bank politics. There should not be any attempt to create a rift in Hindu-Muslim. The bill also has nothing for Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus. Raut said that this bill was passed by the Lok Sabha, but the matter in the Rajya Sabha is different. We need more on both sides in the Rajya Sabha. There are some doubts in our mind which are not resolved, then we will reconsider our stand.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who was protesting against this bill in Patna, described it as unconstitutional. He said that Nitish Kumar supported it to stay in power. Meanwhile, protests against this bill are reported in Aligarh, other than Assam. According to the news agency ANI, the Uttar Pradesh Police has registered an FIR against the students of Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh against 20 students. Apart from this, a case has also been registered against 200 other unidentified students.

There is an uproar in the Northeast States on the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019. Protests also took place in Assam on Wednesday. Some reports said that a large number of security forces have been deployed in Dibrugarh in view of the fierce opposition to the bill. Not only this, the police has used force on the protesters in some places. According to reports, people took to the streets in Jorhat, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur and many other districts.
