Deepak Sharma

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidates for the by-elections in Assam. The BJP has fielded Phanidhar Talukdar from Bhabanipur, Rupjyoti Kurmi from Mariani, and Sushanta Borgohain from Thowra assembly constituencies. Polling in these constituencies will be held on October 30. However, the counting of votes will take place on November 2. For the by-elections to be held on a total of five seats, these three BJP candidates are those MLAs who resigned from the legislative assembly after the election and joined the BJP.

All three had resigned from the legislature

Kurmi and Borgohain had won the recently concluded assembly elections on a Congress ticket. While Talukdar won on the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) ticket. The three leaders had resigned from their assembly membership after joining the BJP.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wants to strengthen his position by getting the MLAs of opposition parties to join the BJP. Under this effort, he got the three opposition MLAs included in the party.

By-elections to be held on two more seats

Apart from these three seats, by-elections are also to be held in the Gosaigaon and Tamulpur seats of the BTR region of the state. The sitting MLA from Gosaigaon, Majendra Narzary, and Leho Ram Boro from Tamulpur died due to coronavirus, after which by-elections are being held here. Let us tell you that the ruling BJP has 60 MLAs in the 126-member Assam Assembly. However, BJP's ally Asom Gana Parishad and United People's Party Liberal have nine and five MLAs respectively.

Congress has 27 MLAs, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) 15, Bodoland People's Front 3, and Communist Marxist Party have 1 MLA while one is independent.
