Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has announced a $ 100 million donation to the US Food Bank to help unemployed Americans. The US is witnessing a huge rise in unemployment due to the coronavirus epidemic. Bezos said in an Instagram post that he wants to help enthusiastic officials of the country’s food bank and those who rely on it for food, and for this, he wants to give $ 100 million to Feeding America.
In the last two weeks of March, more than 10 million people have been unemployed in the US. In the week ending March 28, over 66 lakh people in the US applied for the unemployment allowance for the first week. This is by far the largest number in US history. In the previous week also, more than 33 lakh people had applied for the unemployment allowance for the first week. The number of unemployed people is more than this because many people have complained about not being able to apply due to website problems and phone network problems. During the economic crisis of 2008, a maximum of more than 6 lakh people had applied for the unemployment allowance in the first week.
Bezos said on Friday that through Feeding America this amount would immediately reach food banks and food pantries spread across America and from there food would be supplied to the needy. Food banks and food pantries working for social service get surplus food mainly from restaurants. Many restaurants donate extra food to them. But at the moment, restaurants are closed due to social distancing. Other avenues to obtain additional food are also closed. On the other hand, demand for food banks has become more than ever. Millions of people are becoming unemployed in America and largely the people of America are dependent on these food banks.
