Man of Spirituality who believed in Reason:
Worked against power elaborately than in the power:
Swami Agnivesh was elected to the Haryana Assembly in 1977. He served as the State’s Education Minister. But it stayed for a short period. He worked less under power and more against power through his activism. He resigned his ministry in a protest supporting the labor activist movement against the firings of police.
He had also served as the chairperson of the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery from 1994–2004.
He founded the organization Bonded Labor Liberation Front, to work against the bonded labor. Bonded labor issues were unaddressed even in cosmopolitan cities like Delhi. This organization worked as a platform to address these concerns.
Arya Samaj and Swami Agnivesh:
Swami Agnivesh was the person who provided a wide vantage point for Arya Samaj. His believes and practices were based on reason and logic. He held the presidential position for the World Council of Arya Samaj. which is considered as the highest international body of the Arya Samaj.
Arya Samaj was a part of the Indian Renaissance movement in Indian freedom Struggle times. The fight with social evils was never easy. Swami Agnivesh was considered a firebrand for a swami for the activism. He was a major advocate for dialogue for religions, the dialectics.
It was not about the belief and faith but he involved in various areas of social activism of practical fieldwork. Which included harsh protests, debates, campaigns against female foeticide. He had equality in the gender approach in his journey, he especially contributed to the emancipation of women.
Attacks and Struggles of Swami:
He was also targeted and attacked by the members of Salwa Judum in Dornapal for his activism.
Later in 2011, the Supreme Court made CBI probe an inquiry into the attack on Swami Agnivesh and the reasons. It was a spark of fire in the middle of his seminar, which was well organized and planned. Unfortunately, there is no progress in that inquiry from the CBI and it is incomplete. CBI has charged some people but the original motive and reasons were unaccounted.
Swami – with Maoists, and Anti-corruption Movement:
He also initiated the talks with Naxalites in 2013 for then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Swami with Islamists :
He was a crusader of equality despite the religion involved. He gave a call for world peace. He addressed a large gathering at the Anti-Terrorism Global Peace Conference, at Ramlila Grounds, which is organized by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. He was against prejudice and separatism.
where he stated, “It is wrong to attribute the wrongdoings of a few individuals to the whole community.”
A Versatile Activist:
At a very young age, he took a vow of lifetime sannyasi. He entered politics with Arya Samaj’s principles. He remained an activist throughout his journey. He was non-conformist with rationality and reason. He fought for the removal of Bonded Labor, Women Empowerment, Marginalized people, Farmer’s rights.
He was a voice for the voiceless and he was a mediator for tough ends. His journey touched all the different deprived people. He voiced his opinion openly in journalist Gouri Lankesh’s death also.
On a Controversial Note – Ex- Cbi Chief Nageswara Rao calls, Swami Agnivesh death as a “Good Riddance” :
Nageshwara Rao is having a track record of controversial and pro rightist statements on various occasions. Now, he blatantly has given a statement in twitter saying that Swami Agnivesh has done a lot of loss to Hinduism so it’s better he is dead and it’s a Good Riddance.
Nageswara Rao said – “You were anti-Hindu donning saffron clothes. You did enormous damage to Hinduism. I am ashamed that you were born as a Telugu Brahmin. Lion in sheep clothes. My grievance against Yamaraj is why did he wait this long.”
