Hemant Kumar alias Raju Gupta was taken into police custody on Wednesday, 21 November, after his neighbour accused him of stealing jewellery worth Rs 7 lakhs.

Reena told TOI, that her son was mentally weak and that the mother-son duo was living together in their rented house in Narendra Enclave, Gailana road after her husband passed away in 2001.

"Policemen killed my only son in front of me inside the police station. On Thursday morning, they also took me to the police station and tortured my son as I was made to watch it. They later dropped me back home around 6 pm but kept my son in the lock-up. At 9 pm I was informed by cops that my son is dead" said by Reena Gupta Raju Gupta's mother.

Reports suggest that his death was caused by heart attack and minor injuries on the shoulder, arms and legs.

"Three cops, including inspector Rishipal, sub-inspector Anuj Sirohi and Tejveer Singh have been suspended and an FIR has been lodged against Sikandara police station and two of the victim's neighbours, Anshul Pratap Singh and Vivek."

Raju's neighbours charged him with a stick before handing him over to the police. Agra cops beat men to death in custody, ignore mother's pleas for mercy.

She said her son was mentally 'weak' and that he worked as a helper at a chemical shop. The mother and son were living together in a rented house, while Reenu's two married daughters live in Vrindavan and Delhi.

A case has been filed against Raju's two neighbours too, as a preliminary probe revealed that before handing over Raju to the police, they assaulted him with sticks.
