Sony announced the Xperia XZ3 in August at IFA 2018, but its successor may come out sooner than expected. Reports say that the Xperia XZ4 series will be unveiled at MWC 2019 in February. We haven't heard a lot about the XZ4, but one tipster who goes Ice Universe posted a couple of interesting details about the display on Twitter. For one thing, it seems Sony is planning to launch this phone with a very unusual 21:9 aspect ratio. The tipster revealed this via a screen protector and a render, and this could make for a very interesting smartphone.
There has not been a 21:9 smartphone so far, so we cannot comment on how a phone with this wide an aspect ratio will look like in real life. In the render posted by Ice Universe, we see a weirdly tall phone that will likely stick out of your pant's pocket. Phone manufacturers have so far been toying with 19:9 and 19.5:9 phones primarily. The increasing aspect ratio off late from the traditional 16:9 ratio is thanks to bezels getting thinner and thinner.
The reason the ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio on the Xperia XZ4 is interesting is because it will allow us to see most movies edge-to-edge. By perfectly we mean the content will fill the entire display and there is no black bar on the top and bottom. You may have noticed that phones or TVs with a 16:9 or 18:9 aspect ratio will show movies with black bands. But a 21:9 smartphone or TV will not show significant black frames, offering a more immersive viewing experience.
Most films are either recorded in Cinemascope or anamorphic format, so a 21:9 is the best suited aspect ratio for movies. Theoretically, this means the Xperia XZ4 may offer the perfect way to experience movies on a smartphone. If the leak is true, it also means an unusually tall display on a smartphone.
Apart from the high screen ratio, not much else is known about the Xperia XZ4 at the moment. If the render is to be believed, the display will not be accompanied by a notch of any kind. You can expect evenly narrow bezels on the top and bottom, much like the Galaxy Note 9.
